Erwin Chemerinsky became the 13th Dean of Berkeley Law on July 1, 2017, when he joined the faculty as the Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law.
Prior to assuming this position, from 2008-2017, he was the founding Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, at University of California, Irvine School of Law, with a joint appointment in Political Science. Before that he was the Alston and Bird Professor of Law and Political Science at Duke University from 2004-2008, and from 1983-2004 was a professor at the University of Southern California Law School, including as the Sydney M. Irmas Professor of Public Interest Law, Legal Ethics, and Political Science. He also has taught at DePaul College of Law and UCLA Law School.
He is the author of eleven books, including leading casebooks and treatises about constitutional law, criminal procedure, and federal jurisdiction. His most recent books are, We the People: A Progressive Reading of the Constitution for the Twenty-First Century (Picador Macmillan) published in November 2018, and two books published by Yale University Press in 2017, Closing the Courthouse Doors: How Your Constitutional Rights Became Unenforceable and Free Speech on Campus (with Howard Gillman).
He also is the author of more than 200 law review articles. He writes a regular column for the Sacramento Bee, monthly columns for the ABA Journal and the Daily Journal, and frequent op-eds in newspapers across the country. He frequently argues appellate cases, including in the United States Supreme Court.
In 2016, he was named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2017, National Jurist magazine again named Dean Chemerinsky as the most influential person in legal education in the United States.

Mushtaq Gunja serves as executive director of the Carnegie Classification Systems and Senior Vice President at the American Council on Education. Prior to joining ACE, Gunja served as assistant dean in academic affairs at Georgetown University Law Center (DC), where he was in charge of academic policies for the law school, including accreditation, teaching methods, and new programs related to increased educational outcomes. In the Obama Administration, Gunja served as Chief of Staff in the United States Department of Education, Deputy Associate Counsel in the White House, and an Assistant United States Attorney in Baltimore. He serves as an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown Law and previously taught at the University of Maryland School of Law and Washington Adventist University.
Andrea Roth is a Professor at Berkeley Law and teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, and forensic evidence. She was a public defender for 9 years. She co-authors an Evidence casebook (with David Sklansky), chairs the legal task group of NIST’s Organization of Scientific Area Committees, is a co-director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, and is a member of the American Law Institute. She has received Berkeley Law’s teaching award, the campuswide Distinguished Teaching Award, the Prytanean Award (one pretenure female faculty campuswide), and teaching awards from the Women of Berkeley Law and the Berkeley Criminal Law Journal.
David A. Super is Professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he teaches a wide range of subjects including Contracts, Torts, Property, Evidence, Taxation, Administrative Law, Legislation, Local Government Law, and Public Welfare Law. He also teaches in Georgetown’s RISE pre-orientation program designed to familiarize first-generation students with law school’s case method. In 2019, he won the Frank F. Flegal Excellence in Teaching Award. Prior to joining Georgetown’s faculty, he taught as an adjunct at Columbia, Georgetown, Howard, Penn, Princeton, Washington & Lee, and Yale while serving as general counsel for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Kris Franklin is Professor of Law and Director of Academic Initiatives at New York Law School. She teaches a wide array of foundational doctrinal and experiential courses, writes extensively on legal pedagogy, and developed an innovative program to reinforce law students’ legal reasoning skills through practice-based writing. She co-directs NYLS’s Initiative for Excellence in Law Teaching. She served as chair of the AALS Section on Teaching Methods, after previously chairing the AALS Section on Academic Support.
Cynthia M. Ho is the Clifford E. Vickrey Research Professor of Law at Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. She teaches classes in intellectual property as well as civil procedure and uses formative assessment using different platforms in both contexts. She takes a data-driven approach, using data from pre-class quizzes and in-class “clickers” as well as exam-type hypotheticals to make the best use of class time. She is a co-author of Click & Learn: Civil Procedure, an online and interactive tool to help students learn and/or review Civil procedure concepts. She has written about teaching issues in the Journal of Legal Education, the Law Teaching Blog, and a book about online law teaching.
Bert I. Huang is the Michael I. Sovern Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, where he has been awarded the Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching by the graduating class. In addition, Columbia University has honored him with its Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching. He previously also served as Vice Dean for Intellectual Life. At Columbia, he teaches Civil Procedure and Torts, as well as advanced seminars including the Courts & Legal Process workshop, which he created to bring judges, students, and faculty together to discuss new scholarship.
Molly Shaffer Van Houweling is the Harold C. Hohbach Distinguished Professor of Patent Law and Intellectual Property at the University of California, Berkeley, where she teaches and writes about intellectual property, property, and food law. From 2015-2022, she served as Associate Dean for J.D. Curriculum and Teaching. She is a recipient of UC Berkeley’s Extraordinary Teaching in Extraordinary Times Award and the Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction.
Professor Van Houweling graduated from the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School. She clerked for Judge Michael Boudin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and Justice David H. Souter of the U.S. Supreme Court. She is an Associate Reporter on the American Law Institute’s Restatement of the Law of Copyright and an Adviser to the Restatement of the Law of Property.

Philip M. Genty is the Everett B. Birch Innovative Teaching Clinical Professor in Professional Responsibility and Vice Dean for Experiential Education at Columbia Law School. He joined the Columbia faculty in 1989. He teaches civil procedure and professional responsibility, and he is a faculty member in the Paralegal Pathways Initiative, a program that prepares justice-impacted individuals for careers in legal workplaces. His research interests are in legal ethics, prisoners’ rights, family law, and clinical education. He has taught and consulted on legal ethics and clinical legal education in Central and Eastern Europe and Israel. He received a Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2014, and Columbia Law School’s Willis L.M. Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2008.
