Quantum Computing: Are we ready for Q-Day?

Quantum Computing (QC) has been predicted to become commercially available between 2030 and 2035. Its “arrival” is unknown and largely speculative. Whenever that day arrives is called Q-Day. QC is projected to be tens of thousands of times faster and more powerful than traditional binary computing with which we are familiar. That degree of computing power will render today’s cybersecurity measures ineffective. The highest cybersecurity protection today can be compromised and valuable data repositories stolen. However, technologists and specialists are observing that AI applications are accelerating that timeline. Regardless of the actual arrival time, Pre-Q-Day preparation is essential today to prevent data theft and the use of even encrypted data for criminal gain. The ability of bad actors to “Harvest Now Decript Later” means no data is safe from theft today for later use by the time Q-Day arrives. What can law firms, legal departments, and their clients do today to prevent economic disaster then? This session will explore preparation steps to be taken now to protect against illicit and damaging confidential data theft even in the face of Q-Day.

He previously chaired the Tennessee Supreme Court ADR Commission. A recognized legal technology innovator, he has developed technology applications for Legal Project Management, Responsible AI, and Quantum Cybersecurity.
