Program Highlights

This year’s schedule includes more works-in-progress sessions than ever before! There are also several new AALS Sections holding their debut programs, including Firearms Law, Criminal Procedure, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Professionals.

Wednesday

Join us for the AALS Presidential Opening Plenary session and learn more about the American Law School Dean Study in two morning sessions.

Thursday

Celebrate your colleagues at the AALS Awards Ceremony in the afternoon.

Friday

There’s a special session from the AALS Committee on Recruitment & Retention of Minority Law Teachers and Students in the morning, “After the Statements of Support: Moving Beyond DEI to Implementing Meaningful Approaches to Anti-Racism within Law Schools.”

Later in the afternoon, the AALS Symposium will address “How Law Schools Can Make a Difference: DEI Work in the Curriculum, in the Classroom, and in the Courtroom.”

Saturday

The final day is traditionally a half-day, but the Saturday schedule this time around has been extended through 5 pm to make room for the increased number of works-in-progress and new voices programs.

Be a Speaker

If you would like to propose a program or be a speaker at the Annual Meeting, there are several ways to participate. Visit
https://am.aals.org/program/proposals for more information.

• Propose a Hot Topic program. These AALS programs
  are selected by a committee from a call for proposals.
  Hot Topics are traditional-format scholarly sessions about
  topics that arose too late in the year to be included in other
  types of programs.
• Answer a section call for papers. Many AALS Sections
  identify their panelists via a call for papers. Deadlines
  vary, but may be as late as October.
• Be a discussant in an AALS Discussion Group.
  This year’s topics are:
  • “Multifaceted Strategies for Expanding the Pipeline of Diverse Law Students and Attorneys of Color: Law School, Bar Association, and Judicial Commission Collaboration,”
  • “Russia and Ukraine in the New Global Order,”
  • “The Future of Law School Rankings,” and
  • “What a Difference a Difference Makes: Empowering Students through Self Determination Theory?”

Networking

There are plenty of opportunities for you to connect with colleagues new and familiar throughout the meeting.

General networking

Attend the opening reception outdoors on the terrace at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, cruise the Exhibit Hall, arrange meetings during the extended coffee breaks each day of the meeting, and check out section and law school receptions each night.

For new faculty

Your first stop should be the session for first-time meeting attendees on January 3, followed immediately that evening by the reception for new law school teachers.

For pre-tenure teachers of color

The annual Workshop for Pretenured Law School Teachers of Color will take place on Friday, January 6.

COVID Guidelines

Health and safety protocols during the 2023 Annual Meeting will be guided by the advice of the CDC and the State of California as of next January. We will share more details and protocols with you via email and the Annual Meeting website this fall.
