Purpose

The Section on Part-Time Division Programs (a) promotes the communication of ideas, interests and activities among members of the section in order to improve the quality of part-time legal education; (b) provides support to law schools seeking to add or enhance part-time legal education programs; and (c) makes recommendations to the Association on matters concerning part-time (day and evening) legal education programs.

Annual Award of the Section on Part-Time Division Programs

This yearly award is designed to honor an individual for outstanding contributions to the legal academy in line with the mission of the AALS Section on Part-Time Programs to “(a) promote the communication of ideas, interests and activities among members of the Section in order to improve the quality of part-time legal education, (b) provide support to law schools seeking to add or enhance part-time legal education programs, and (c) make recommendations to the Association on matters concerning part-time (day and evening) legal education.”
Criteria for Nomination:
Demonstration through teaching, scholarship, or service in the legal academy, (including through membership and contributions to building/maintaining the AALS Section on Part-Time Programs) of one or more of the following:
  1. Dedication to building community and developing robust resources in professional organizations for those who administer, teach, and learn in nontraditional J.D. programs (part-time, evening, weekend); including but not limited to the AALS Section on Part-Time Programs.
  2. Dedication to enhancing the ability of the legal academy to consider the needs of part-time, evening, or weekend students.
  3. Record of service to nontraditional J.D. programs in law schools and/or the greater law school community.
  4. Record of innovative teaching, pedagogical design, classroom techniques, administration, and/or program design in nontraditional J.D. programs.
  5. Advancement of discourse/promoting institutional recognition of challenges and solutions to teaching and administering nontraditional J.D. programs, especially as technology evolves.
