Institutional Advancement Newsletter – October 2022

Fall is upon us!

As we come to the last three months of 2022, the IA Section has two more timely virtual programs on the calendar. Join us on Wednesday, November 2, for an informative conversation about Collaboration on Marquee Events and Gifts. On November 30, we will hear the NALP Foundation’s insights for IA professionals from their annual report of alumni three years after graduation. Informal networking and year-end well wishes will follow the presentation. The registration links are below.

Looking ahead, it is nearly time to elect our section leadership for 2023. Terms begin at the close of the Annual Meeting in January. A slate of section officers — co-chairs and co-chairs elect — will be presented through a virtual balloting process in December. Service on the executive committee is a great way to support colleagues in IA across the country with opportunities to learn from experts, share best practices, and network. If you are interested in learning more about the executive committee, please reach out to Liz Field, Mary Ann Soden, or any of the IA Section Officers.

Professional Development

Good Read

Christine Charnosky, ALM/Law.com, Oct. 24, 2022

Legal education reporter for Law.com, details her recent immersive experience at New York Law School.

Elizabeth Olson, bloomberglaw.com, updated Oct. 7, 2022

Thoughtful assessment of how the position of law school dean has evolved towards being more like a chief executive of a sprawling business than a tweed-clad dispenser of constitutional wisdom.

Good Listen

Check out the new audio podcast series Constitutional Crisis Hotline, hosted by Professors Jed Shugerman and Julie Suk. In each episode, experts will join the hosts to break down Supreme Court decisions, analyze developments in public law and policy, and discuss breaking legal news.

Good Watch

Sidelined after an accident, hotshot Los Angeles lawyer Mickey Haller restarts his career – and his trademark Lincoln – when he takes on a murder case. Starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Neve Campbell, and Becki Newton. Based on Michael Connelly’s novels of the same name.

Sharing is Caring

October Topic – Collaborating Across Departments

How do your law school’s fundraising and communications professionals collaborate on marquee events and gifts? Share your interdepartmental best practices on our Section Sharing Sheet on the Institutional Advancement Website!

You can post links to annual reports, alumni magazines, marketing collateral, or any other materials you’d like to share with your IA colleagues.
