Albany Law partners with area sheriff’s office to reduce recidivism

WAMC — The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with Albany Law School on a new strategy to prevent people from returning to jail. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says the county jail has between four hundred and five hundred inmates right now – less than half of its max capacity.

CUNY SCHOOL OF LAW — CUNY Law’s Immigrant and Non-Citizen Rights Clinic partnered with the New York Immigration Coalition to release a new report that examines how the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice are using over-broad gang allegations to deport and detain Latinx communities across New York State.

CUNY Law Defenders Clinic discusses their focus on clemency for the incarcerated

QUEENS DAILY EAGLE — The CUNY Law Defenders Clinic has made clemency their mission. The clinic currently represents 15 people seeking clemency from the governor, including Stanley Bellamy. Under a 2015 measure, incarcerated New Yorkers are eligible for clemency through reprieves, commutations and pardons issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Columbia Law’s Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic files brief in discrimination case based on sexual orientation

COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL — In deciding whether to overturn a ruling against a man who claims an employment offer was rescinded because he is gay, the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is not bound by a nearly 30-year-old appellate decision, according to a brief filed by the Columbia Law School Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic.

Columbia Law students use spring break to provide free legal services to underserved populations

COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL — More than 100 Columbia Law students participated in the Spring Break Pro Bono Caravans program. Working full-time with 23 public interest organizations and public defenders’ offices, they used the spring break to provide free legal services to underserved populations and understaffed organizations.

Cleveland-Marshall Law Professor Jonathan Witmer-Rich, one of the authors of the bail task force report, discussed some of the findings of the institute report with the Cuyahoga County’s Criminal Justice Council.
