DUKE LAW — During the fall 2021 semester, Duke Law School offered its first readings course exploring the systems contributing to America’s complex and controversial “school-to-prison pipeline.” Led by Clinical Professor Crystal Grant and Senior Lecturing Fellow Peggy Nicholson, 12 students met weekly for seven weeks for in-depth discussions based on assigned readings and viewings, as well as guest speakers, including attorneys and advocates. “It really connects to a lot of social issues that are being discussed right now at the Law School and more broadly, said Nicholson, supervising attorney for Duke Law’s Children’s Law Clinic.  “You can’t talk about the school-to-prison pipeline without talking about race and the impacts of race on students and their experiences in school. You can’t talk about the school-to-prison pipeline without talking about policing and the central problems of having police in schools and the way that it impacts students’ experience.”
