Founded in 1910, NCCU is a distinguished Historically Black University (HBCU) located in Durham, North Carolina. NCCU has a long-standing history of expanding educational opportunities and fostering student achievement. As a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, it continues to serve a broad student population through its dedication to academic excellence, personal growth, and community involvement. The School of Law enrolls approximately 361 Juris Doctor students, attracting students from a variety of backgrounds—many of whom are committed to serving underserved communities in North Carolina and beyond. The University’s current strategic plan, Vision 2030, is driven by five strategic pillars: academic excellence; student experience; institutional sustainability; operational excellence; and transformational engagement.

Reporting to the Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Law. The Dean is the chief liaison with the University and is responsible for the following functions directly or indirectly: managing the budget and finance; carrying out the instructional programs and implementing educational and professional objectives; working with faculty, staff, and students in developing quality teaching, scholarly  research, and public service programs; maintaining and improving the Law Library and Law School Technology; planning, implementing and administering admissions policies and procedures; and coordinating internal and external communications.

The successful candidate will be a creative and innovative leader with strong communication and problem-solving skills and the ability to serve as a collaborative partner to senior leadership and colleagues across the University.

The Dean will demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. The Dean should have a track record of administrative success in a law school setting, including a history of developing and maintaining consensus and cohesiveness. Required qualifications include an earned JD or its equivalent from an ABA-accredited institution law school or equivalent; a distinguished record of professional achievement and leadership; and knowledge and understanding of legal education and pedagogy. The next Dean should be prepared to: Develop the leadership team and strengthen cohesion within the Law School; Create and implement a dynamic marketing program that will highlight the success of graduates and identify the unique brand of NCCU School of Law; Commit to the historic mission of the Law School while strengthening the Law School’s standing with the ABA; Design and implement the fundraising programs to support the leadership agenda; Develop a strong partnership with undergraduate programs and build a robust pipeline to ensure the Law School has strong applicant pools for future generations; Strengthen relations with national and regional law firms, federal agencies, state and local governments and other employers to increase outcomes; Increase enrollment numbers; Continue to advance the excellent IT infrastructure and leverage its potential for curricular, marketing, alumni, and other outreach purposes; and promote, encourage, and support faculty scholarship and service activities, and facilitating teaching excellence.
