Katherine Kraschel Joins Solomon Center as New Executive Director

Katherine L. Kraschel has joined the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy at Yale Law School as the new Executive Director.

Kraschel, who will also serve as a Visiting Clinical Lecturer in Law, will co-teach the Reproductive Justice Clinic and the Medical-Legal Partnership Seminar.

Prior to coming to Yale, Kraschel was Associate Counsel at Yale New Haven Health System, focusing on corporate regulatory work including affiliations, clinical research, and Stark and Anti-kickback compliance. Before that, she was an associate at Foley & Lardner’s Boston office and worked in their health care practice group. She also completed Harvard Medical School’s Fellowship in Bioethics and serves on Yale New Haven Hospital’s Ethics Committee.

Gluck ’00, Faculty Director for the Solomon Center. “Having worked with her for the past three years in her capacity as Associate General Counsel of Yale New Haven Hospital, I am certain her energy, professionalism, commitment to health law, and love of teaching will enrich us all enormously. Her connections to the medical side of campus will also further deepen our interdisciplinary ties and reinforce our commitment to the link between health law and the real-world business, practice and governance of medicine.”

Before pursuing a career in law, Kraschel worked as a scientist at Pfizer.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Mount Holyoke College and a law degree from Harvard Law School, where she was a student fellow at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics as well as the submissions editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender. She also served on the Mount Holyoke College Board of Trustees.

Kraschel has lectured on and published in the health law and bioethics space, and is particularly interested in assisted reproductive technologies, health policy and gender, reproductive rights, and clinical research ethics. Most recently, she co-authored a chapter in The Handbook of Gestational Surrogacy – International Clinical Practice and Policy Issues. She is also interested in non-profit law, higher education, and governance. In 2016, the National LGBT Bar Association named Katie one of the Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40.  

Kraschel will take over for Tamar Ezer, who served as the first Executive Director for the Solomon Center. Ezer will be leaving the center to become an Associate Research Scholar in Law and Visiting Human Rights Scholar for the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights.

“We are so grateful to Tamar for her service as to the Center and congratulate her on her new teaching position at the law school,” said Gluck. “Tamar has been instrumental in developing our nationally-recognized Medical-Legal Partnership program, promoting student research, and professionalizing the operations of the Center as a whole.”

The Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy at Yale Law School is the first of its kind to focus on intersection of law and the governance, practice, and business of health care. The Center brings together leading experts and practitioners from the public and private sectors to address cutting-edge questions of health law and policy, and to train the next generation of top health lawyers, industry leaders, policymakers, and academics.
