New professorship honors Dennis I. Belcher

A recent gift of over $500,000 from the friends, family, and colleagues of Dennis I. Belcher, L’76 will establish a new professorship at the University of Richmond School of Law in his honor.

Dennis Belcher was a partner at McGuireWoods, where he worked for 41 years in the field of trusts and estates. He was nationally recognized in his field, and his leadership included serving as president of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and as chairman of the American Bar Association’s Section of Real Property, Trust, and Estate Law. Dennis was committed to his local community, and served on the Board of Governors for St. Christopher’s School and the Board of Directors of the Commonwealth Club, in addition to having an instrumental role in the founding of Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, where he was general counsel. He died in April 2017.

The campaign to fund the professorship was spearheaded by McGuireWoods, which made an initial gift. “The generosity of Dennis’ friends and family is a true testament to his character, and we’re proud to honor his legacy in this significant way” said Dean Wendy Perdue.  “Professorships are one tool we can use to continue to attract and retain top faculty. We look forward to awarding the professorship to a faculty member who is as exceptional a law professor as Dennis was a lawyer.”
