Two UC Irvine law profs announce they are running for Congress

Two law professors at the University of California at Irvine, both Democrats, have announced they are running for Congress in a bid to unseat the Republican incumbent, Mimi Walters.
The first law professor to announce, Katie Porter, is an expert in consumer law and bankruptcy who co-wrote a book on debt and credit law with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., report the Orange County Register, the Sacramento Bee and the Los Angeles Times. Porter has Warren’s endorsement.
The second to announce, Dave Min, is a former aide to Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., with an expertise in banking regulations, the Orange County Register reports. He also has worked with the Center for American Progress.
Both have law degrees from Harvard.
Porter told the Sacramento Bee that she was one of the first to sound the alarm about Wall Street abuses in the housing market. Her expertise gained her an appointment to monitor distribution of California’s portion of a national mortgage foreclosure settlement.
“I’m really running to do what I’ve always done, which is to stand up to special interests,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

Min, who is the son of Korean immigrants, told the Orange County Register that he decided to run after President Donald Trump imposed a temporary travel ban on immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries.
“You think about what brought my parents here—it was the core American values of tolerance, diversity, economic opportunity and social mobility,” Min told the Register. “What Trump was doing with the Muslim ban was un-American. Who’s next on Donald Trump’s list?”
