Touro Law Announces New FlexTime J.D. Program

Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center announced a new FlexTime J.D. program designed to accommodate the schedules of students who might typically enter a part-time law program, but need even more flexibility for work or family obligations.

“This innovative program will provide students with maximum flexibility while maintaining a rigorous course of study that will prepare them for the realities of law practice. The program uses the latest in evidence-based teaching and learning tools and promises to be both robust and rewarding for all involved,” stated Dean Harry Ballan.

FlexTime students will be able to complete the requirements for their J.D. in under four years, allowing members of the inaugural fall 2018 class to sit for the July 2022 bar exam.

During the first two years of the program, students will attend three consecutive semesters – fall, spring and summer – to complete 48 credits in the first 24 months. The remaining 40 credits will be completed during the third and fourth years and do not require any on-campus summer attendance.

Online courses will play an integral role in the completion of elective credits. Fifteen credits will consist entirely of online electives, including all credits earned during the third and final summer of the program.

Generally, the program requires on-campus classes every other Sunday during the first two years. After that, FlexTime students will be able to take many courses entirely online, reducing the number of on-campus classes and providing more flexibility.

“We have a long tradition of offering user-friendly educational opportunities that meet the academic and lifestyle needs of our diverse student body,” said Dr. Alan Kadish, president of the Touro College & University System. “Using the latest technology, this forward-thinking program will help law students pursue high level studies in a flexible way that works for their needs.”

All class content, both on-campus and online, will be delivered in a way that mirrors the standards for Touro Law’s full-time day program. The extended in-person sessions and online delivery platform will provide numerous teaching and learning opportunities unique to the FlexTime J.D.

Professor Jack Graves, Director of Digital Learning at Touro Law, said that FlexTime J.D. will have access to a wide variety of in-person interactions, discussion boards, online peer assessment tools, videoconferencing, and social media platforms.

“This program provides the perfect opportunity for a diligent, self-motivated student who does not require the structure of daily, in-person class meetings, but does require significant scheduling flexibility to earn his or her law degree—all without in any way compromising the quality of the education,” Graves said. “It’s truly exciting and should open doors for many non-traditional law students.”

Touro Law’s new FlexTime J.D. program to begin in the fall of 2018. Tuition is proejcted to be $15,120 for the 2018-2019 Fall and Spring semesters, and $10,080 for the Summer semester.

Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law is located in Central Islip, New York.
