94 VLS students receive 2017 summer stipends to support pro bono legal work

Ninety-four Vanderbilt Law students received summer stipends to support their volunteer legal work with government agencies, in the chambers of federal and state judges; in the offices of federal attorneys general and state district attorneys and public defenders; in state and municipal legal offices; and with public interest and advocacy organizations. During summer 2017, these students are working in unpaid legal positions in 20 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and in Brussels, Belgium.

Summer stipends are supported by Vanderbilt Law School, the Vanderbilt Legal Aid Society, the Garrison Social Justice Fellowship, the George Barrett Social Justice Program, the Henricksen Charitable Trust, the McCune Charitable Trust, the Starrett Family Fund, the Hartman Public Interest Stipend Fund, the Torry Johnson Stipend Fund, the Nichols Humanitarian Fund, the Program in Law and Government, the Environmental Stipend Fund and the Branstetter Litigation and Dispute Resolution Program. These stipends provide summer funding for students who serve in unpaid legal positions with government or nonprofit organizations.

“Vanderbilt Law students gain invaluable experience in many areas of law with support from stipends funded by Vanderbilt’s Legal Aid Society, alumni contributions and academic programs,” said Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Susan Kay. “Their work experiences will enrich their legal education and careers and help many decide on a career path. In addition, their experiences will enrich the legal education of their fellow students when they bring their summer experiences into their law school classes.”
