Stanford Law Co-Hosts Forum on Furthering Economic Opportunities for Women

The Hamilton Project at Brookings, LeanIn.Org, and Stanford Law hosted a public forum on October 19 that explored public policies to promote women’s economic opportunity. The event, “Policies to Promote Women’s Economic Opportunity,” brought together scholars, policymakers, and leaders in business and nonprofit enterprises for a day of discussion on how to drive economic growth by expanding women’s participation in the economy.

Professor Deborah Rhode presented framing remarks during the public forum on October 19.

Stanford Law’s Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean M. Elizabeth Magill opened the conference. In her welcome remarks, Magill emphasized the work the law school is doing to prepare students for careers in law and policy. “Stanford Law encourages our students to tackle the great challenges of our day–challenges like economic and gender inequality,” she said. “We strive to provide them with the tools to reach creative and far-reaching legal and policy solutions to impact our world.”

Nearly 200 attended the forum in person (with hundreds more watching a live webcast), which featured three roundtable discussions on the topics of advancing women’s participation in the workforce; expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare; and building lifelong economic security.

Law Professor and Director of the Center on the Legal Profession Deborah Rhode presented framing remarks ahead of the day’s third panel, a roundtable on building lifelong economic security. Rhode, an expert on women in leadership, emphasized that solutions to the problems being discussed during the day’s forum require having more women in pivotal leadership roles.
