Southern Illinois University School of Law invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2020. SIU Law, located in Carbondale, Illinois, and part of a multi-campus university system, seeks a dynamic, experienced leader with a demonstrated understanding of: legal education, institutional growth and development, and the current challenges facing law schools.

Founded in 1973, with the goal of serving the area’s unmet legal needs, SIU Law holds true to its foundational motto: “Established in the public interest, serving the public good.” As the region’s only public law school, SIU Law prides itself on providing an accessible, collegial learning environment where students are transformed into practice-ready lawyers and community leaders. This transformative process incorporates: a robust focus on teaching, innovative research and advocacy projects, a pro bono requirement, and experiential learning. Our clinical programs and externship opportunities not only hone students’ lawyering skills but also offer access to justice for those who would otherwise go without legal assistance. Moreover, SIU Law’s library is the primary public legal research resource for the southern portion of the state.

In addition, SIU Law’s faculty consists of active public service advocates who engage on the local, state, and national levels. These same faculty members are also effective, energetic, and productive educators and scholars who teach and publish in a broad range of subject-matter arenas. Though still a young school, SIU Law also possesses the distinction of having more than 120 judges among the ranks of its alumni, as well as numerous legal and industry trailblazers.

SIU Law’s comparatively low tuition provides students with the financial freedom to pursue whatever legal career they choose, as they graduate with law school debt that is 39% below the national average. Furthermore, 91% of our students receive scholarships, and all students pay the in-state tuition rate. Given these attractive economic offerings, we draw a diverse enrollment from across the United States, as well as from other countries, despite being regionally situated. Our commitment to bolstering diversity has garnered a student body comprised of 47% women, and 26% of our first-year students are minorities. At the same time, we intentionally enhanced our selectivity, resulting in significantly higher admissions criteria and a smaller class size.

In terms of location, SIU Law is housed on the SIU Carbondale campus, a Carnegie-classified research institution. As a result, the School of Law offers joint-degree programs for students and cross-appointments for faculty with other SIU schools and departments, including medicine and business. As an added bonus, SIU Carbondale is nestled on the edge of the 270,000-acre Shawnee National Forest in an ecologically stunning area that features: 28 nature preserves; 9 lakes; 6 rivers; a rare cypress wetlands; numerous biking and hiking trails; a variety of cultural heritage sites; and an abundance of orchards, wineries, and microbreweries. SIU Law is in easy driving distance to major metropolitan areas, including St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, and Indianapolis. Carbondale, itself, is a heterogeneous, eclectic, and affordable locality in which to live.

In the role of Dean, the right candidate will be able to build on existing interdisciplinary collaborations at the university, local, state, national, and international levels. With SIU campuses located in Edwardsville and Springfield, expanded outreach into the St. Louis metropolitan area and the state capital are primed for strategic advancement. Given an increasing and maturing alumni base and pioneering partnership prospects, the incoming Dean will also be empowered to leverage a shared vision to establish signature growth and development initiatives and educational innovations.
