The University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for the position of Dean of the Law School. The Dean is the Law School’s chief academic and administrative officer, providing thoughtful and equitable leadership, strategic planning, and management of a nationally renowned academic program.
The Dean serves two equally important roles on the Boulder campus. First, the Dean is the principal advocate for the Law School both within and outside the university. Second, as a member of the Provost’s campus academic leadership team, the Dean works collaboratively with other administrators and academic leaders to advance the goals and mission of the CU Boulder campus overall. This leader must be committed to: excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; providing collaborative leadership both within and outside the school; valuing and encouraging the contributions of a wide variety of individuals and programs; recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty, students, and staff; supporting academic freedom and the principles of diversity, inclusiveness, equity, and accessibility; and engaging in significant fundraising. The Dean must always act in furtherance of CU Boulder’s values of integrity, respect, inclusiveness, and openness.
Colorado Law’s offerings include the nationally recognized juris doctor program, legal clinics and other robust experiential learning opportunities, research centers, student-run journals, dual-degree programs, master’s programs, and certificate programs. It enrolls approximately 525 students and employs approximately 70 full-time faculty and 65 staff.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Who We Are
With our roots in Colorado and a global outlook, we are a supportive and diverse educational and scholarly community in a place that inspires the vigorous pursuit of ideas, critical analysis, contemplation, and civic engagement to advance knowledge about the law in an open, just society. Our mission is to be an outstanding public law school that: provides students with state-of-the-art legal education and prepares them to serve wisely and with professionalism; advances the development of knowledge through scholarship, testing of new insights, and challenges to the status quo; and serves as a vehicle and catalyst for meaningful public service, all of which deliver high value to our students and have positive impacts—both locally and globally—on the legal profession and society.
Vision and Leadership
As the chief academic officer of the Law School, the Dean must work thoughtfully to manage and implement the missions of the school and the university; maintain and advance the Law School’s commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; and ensure that Colorado Law is on a sustainable path for the future as the national landscape for legal education continues to change.
As the chief academic officer of the Law School, the Dean shall promote excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service; and shall facilitate the development and enhancement of academic and professional opportunities that meet the needs of CU Law students.
The Dean supervises full and part-time faculty and staff; in collaboration and consultation with associate deans and faculty, recruits and evaluates faculty and makes recommendations to the Provost on faculty appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure, and termination; oversees and facilitates the annual performance evaluation process for faculty and staff; and assesses and plans for staffing needs and structures. The individual in this position must effectively and efficiently manage and oversee the budgets of the Law School and Dean’s Office, which includes preparing the annual budget; allocating discretionary funds to initiate, support, and promote academic initiatives that are consistent with the strategic direction of the school and the university; and augmenting the financial resources of the school through private fundraising initiatives.
Fundraising and Advancement
Under the ultimate direction of the Chancellor and in partnership with University Advancement and the Law School Advancement team, the Dean plays a critical role in creating a compelling and realizable vision for philanthropic support and alumni and external engagement. The Dean will help inform the creation of new fundraising and alumni engagement programs and have significant involvement in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual and institutional donors, including major foundations and law firms. The Dean will attend numerous donor and alumni engagement meetings and events throughout the year and will provide leadership to the School’s Law Alumni Board.
Outreach and Collaboration
The Dean represents the Law School to university administration; on the Boulder campus Council of Deans, other campus bodies, committees, and councils; serves as the Law School’s spokesperson at academic, social, and public functions; engages in outreach activities to maintain collegial relationships with alumni and external constituencies of the Law School; and engages in professional service activities to maintain and enhance their professional and scholarly development and presence in the profession and in the larger community. Consistent and in coordination with the strategic directives of the Chancellor and the Chancellor’s cabinet, the Dean serves the CU system and the state of Colorado.
