The Faculty Appointments Register (FAR) is an online database of applications submitted by individuals who are interested in teaching at law schools. The FAR is hosted on Interfolio. If you participate in AALS Faculty Recruitment Services, you will pay the $290 fee (which covers all services) at the time you submit your profile to the FAR. If you are experiencing financial hardship and would like to be considered for a fee waiver, see “Hardship Waiver for FAR Fee” below.
How It Works
First, you will create an account in Interfolio; this account is your access point for your FAR profile. We urge you to visit Becoming a Law Teacher for detailed advice on how to fill out your FAR application.
You must complete your fee payment before you can submit your finished FAR application. You will need a unique code found in your payment confirmation email in order to complete your submission. When you fill out your account on Interfolio, you will see a payment confirmation page with a link to pay the fee and receive your email confirmation. If you are an applicant outside the United States, please allow for additional time to receive the confirmation.
Please note: You will receive a link later in the year to register for the Faculty Recruitment Conference if you choose to attend. There is no RSVP mechanism in Interfolio or the FAR. There is no additional charge to attend FRC.
Because the FAR is open on a rolling basis from June through September, applicant information is collected and released to law school hiring teams in three timed batches. These are called “distributions.” On each distribution date, the applicant information from that distribution becomes searchable in the FAR database for the rest of the cycle. This ensures that hiring teams can easily identify new applications submitted after the first deadline while maintaining access to all previous applicant information.
Applicant Deadlines and FAR Distributions 2020
|1||August 12, 2020||August 20, 2020|
|2||September 2, 2020||September 10, 2020|
|3||September 28, 2020||October 5, 2020|
The distribution your information is included in depends on when you submit your fee and final FAR application. To ensure that your profile is included in your desired distribution, make sure you submit your FAR payment by the date in the schedule above.
Note: Our records show that the first release is the one most used by law school hiring teams.
How to Complete the FAR
To participate in the FAR, you need to enter data about your qualifications and experience into Interfolio. Everything you include is entered into a searchable database where interviewers can review your application. The steps to complete the FAR are as follows:
Go to the FAR website using the button below. Click “Apply Now.” If you have never used Interfolio before, click “Create an Account” and follow the instructions to register. If you have used Interfolio in the past, log in.
2. Complete the Profile
When you are logged into Interfolio, fill out each of the forms. There are eight pages in the FAR profile. They do not need to be completed in order, but they must all be completed before you submit your profile.
The form requests:
- Uploaded Documents (Resume, Research Agenda etc.)
- Contact Information
- Teaching Preferences
- Employment Experience
- Academic Publications
- Bar and Geographic Restrictions
- Demographic Information
For detailed information about how to fill out your FAR profile, visit Becoming a Law Teacher.
3. Submit Your FAR Information and Payment
When you are ready to submit your finalized FAR application, go to the “Payment Confirmation” page; it will ask for a code in order to complete it. To receive your code, find the link (located on the same page) to the separate FAR payment website. Click that link, complete the credit card information, and submit your payment. Once you have done so, you will receive an email with the confirmation code you need to enter on the “Payment Confirmation” page.
You may complete your payment any time, but you cannot finish and submit your application until you do.
4. Verify Accuracy
You may continue to edit your FAR profile during the interim period after you pay the FAR fee but before the deadline for the distribution passes. After the distribution deadline passes, you will no longer have access to your FAR application. It is important to:
- Verify that all information is accurate and complete
- Print a copy of your FAR information for your records
When finished, you may click “Submit Deliveries” from the main menu to view your form. Please make sure you pay the fee and submit your form in time to meet the deadline to be included in the distribution you prefer.
You will receive an email confirming your FAR application was received.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am on the FAR website, how do I access the FAR Form?
AALS partnered with Interfolio to create a new application process that offers more robust search capabilities for schools while streamlining the process for candidates submitting their information. You do not have to pay before filling out your FAR application, but you must pay before submitting your application to FAR.
I have paid the FAR fee. Where do I fill out the FAR application?
Once you have paid, you can go to the application. Please note, you do not have to pay before filling out your FAR application, but you will be asked for the payment confirmation number you receive before you can submit your application.
Can I make a PDF of my FAR Application?
While you can review your form at any time and are able to edit it until the distribution closes, Interfolio does not enable you to create a PDF of your FAR application. In contrast to the old FAR form, you will be able to view the pages of the form even when the distribution is closed. You are just unable to edit them.
How can I edit my FAR Application after I submit it?
You may continue to edit your FAR application after you submit it until the distribution deadline. To edit your FAR application, please login to www.interfolio.com and click “Deliveries” on the left hand side. Next, click “edit” beside the distribution. Once you make any changes, make sure to click “update” at the button of the page to save any changes. After the distribution deadline passes, you will no longer be able to edit your FAR application.
What tools do appointment committees use to review applications?
Interfolio allows for a robust search and filter process. Appointment committees are able to filter through all answered questions on the forms. For example, if a committee is looking for a constitutional law professor they can search by the teaching preferences form that candidates fill out.
What candidate materials are accepted? Which are required? Which are optional?
The only documents required to apply to the FAR are a CV and a list of references. There is a wide variety of other formats including documents, webpages, and videos that Interfolio accepts. You may upload additional documents you consider relevant to your application. Many candidates upload research agendas and job talk papers, but they are optional.
What does the document “Contact Reference” mean?
Under required documents, you must upload a document listing your references.
I do not see a place to list my employment history. Where does that information go?
With the Interfolio system, employment history should be included in the CV that you upload. This gives you more flexibility to list your employment history in the manner and order that you desire.
Where do I list the information to contact my most recent employers?
Contact information for employers should be listed in the contact references document you upload. The reason we ask if schools can contact your most recent employer is to protect you from having a school contact an employer if you do not want them contacted.
Should I use Interfolio’s system for requesting, storing, and transmitting letters of recommendation?
You are not required to use Interfolio’s system for letters of recommendation. Interfolio’s letters of recommendation system is not included in the FAR Application fee.
Can I update my uploaded documents after the distribution deadline?
No. Once the deadline for a distribution has passed, you are unable to make additional updates to the documents. If you need to change a document after the deadline, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. AALS may be able to update your document.
Whom do I contact if I have questions about the FAR process?
Please contact us at email@example.com.
Whom do I contact if I have technical questions about the platform?
For any technical questions about using the platform, please contact Interfolio at firstname.lastname@example.org or (877) 997-8807.
Hardship Waiver for FAR Fee
AALS may waive the fee for applicants who are unable to pay due to financial hardship. Inability to pay the fee must be verified via a fee waiver application. If you want to be considered for a fee waiver, AALS must receive your application by the deadlines below, which correspond with FAR distribution dates. We will confirm whether your waiver application has been approved at least a week before the distribution due date.
