UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State Law Assistant Dean of Graduate and International Programs Stephen Barnes has been named an honorary professor at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in Beijing in recognition of his years of service teaching and fostering international cooperation between CUPL, Penn State Law, and other leading legal education institutions around the world.

Barnes served on the CUPL faculty as a visiting law professor from 2008 to 2014, and continues to teach a 10 day “Introduction to U.S. Law” course each year. His role at CUPL led to Penn State Law becoming one of the first U.S. law schools to foster engagement with Chinese students, and has led to numerous LL.M. students and visiting faculty members attending Penn State Law, as well as a new exchange program between the two schools.

“My years on the faculty at CUPL are among the most rewarding in my career, and to be able to continue to foster the relationship between our two schools is a great joy,” Barnes said. “I am deeply humbled and honored by this recognition.”

Barnes was recognized at a formal ceremony on Oct. 26, which was attended by Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee Gao Huanyue, Vice Dean Xue Xiaojian, and Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office Lu Yong.

Huanyue congratulated Barnes on behalf of the CUPL, noting his foundational role in helping establish relationships between the school and institutions in Croatia, Russia, the United States, and numerous other nations. Xiaojian also congratulated Barnes and welcomed him as a member of the CUPL family, noting in particular his “enthusiasm, selflessness, and dedication.”

At the ceremony, Barnes thanked his colleagues for their recognition and said that he feels Beijing and CUPL are his second home. He affirmed his dedication to continuing to build international relationships and partnerships for the benefit of CUPL and law schools and students around the world.
