June 6, 2016

The Board of Trustees of The City University of New York today appointed Mary Lu Bilek as the fifth Dean of CUNY School of Law. Chancellor James B. Milliken recommended Bilek’s appointment to the CUNY Board of Trustees after a national search.

Bilek is currently dean of University of Massachusetts School of Law, a position she has held since 2012.

In a statement, Chancellor Milliken described Dean Bilek as “an exceptional leader with three decades of exemplary experience and service, including overseeing the development of CUNY Law’s innovative curriculum and its accreditation by the appropriate national agencies. Together with her academic experience and recent role as a public law school dean in Massachusetts, she is uniquely suited to further elevate the only public law school in New York City.”

The nomination was approved unanimously. The appointment is effective August 15, 2016.

“I can’t overstate how personally and professionally happy I am to be back in the school that stole my heart 25 years ago,” Bilek said, “to be part of building on its history and to continue the work that Dean Anderson pursued to raise its profile and its stature, and increase the impact that the school, its scholarship, and its graduates have on the city the state and the world.”

Dean Bilek will succeed Michelle Anderson, who will become the 10th president of Brooklyn College, effective August 1. University leaders credit Dean Anderson with advancing the CUNY Law as one of the nation’s top-ranked law schools in clinical programs and overseeing a move to a new, state-of-the-art facility during her decade-long tenure at CUNY Law.

Bilek has a deep-rooted history with CUNY Law, dating back to 1985 when she joined the Law School’s faculty, in time to teach the first graduating class. She served as academic dean to three of the Law School’s deans, as interim dean during the 2005-06 academic year, and then as dean of special projects.
