The Emory Law 100 honors the achievements and impact of 100 of the school’s most distinguished alumni and friends. Bowers — then Lucy Heinreitze — is a 1966 graduate of Emory University School of Law.

Bowers was the first tenured woman, first Candler Professor for the law school, and first female Candler Professor at Emory University. She served on the faculty from 1970 to 1983 and is one of Emory Law’s best-known graduates in law teaching.

After leaving Emory, Bowers taught at the LSU Law Center for more than 25 years as the Vinson & Elkins Professor of Law. At LSU, she taught Criminal Justice, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, Juvenile Law and Mediation. She also co-taught the Juvenile Defense Representation Clinic, in which third-year law students represented real juveniles in the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Court.

Bowers later served as the eighth dean and president of Appalachian School of Law in 2012.
