IU McKinney Represented on Panel to Discuss Pathway Program during ABA Event
07/14/2021
Three people with IU McKinney connections will take part in a discussion about educational pipeline programs aimed at increasing access to the legal profession. The law school’s Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion Patricia Kinney, ’02, and Professor Max Huffman, will be joined on the panel by Erin M. Engels, ’99, Director of Paralegal Studies and Pre-law Advisor in the Department of Political Science in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. The discussion is part of the American Bar Association’s Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline and it will take place July 30.
The goal of pipeline programs is to increase diversity in the legal profession. The discussion aims to assess how well the programs are working so far. The event will feature presentations from the California Pathway to Law Initiative, focusing on the Community College segment of the pathway, and the ABA Pathway Program at IU McKinney.
Pathways to the Law is a four-course sequence at IU McKinney that takes undergraduate students through courses in Introduction to Law, Introduction to Legal Writing, Logic and Legal Reasoning, and Advanced Legal Reasoning. Students also become acquainted with essential skills necessary to earn admission to and succeed in law school. Program participants are integrated into a larger network of law students, legal professionals, and the IU McKinney law school family. The ABA Office of Diversity and Inclusion partnered with IU McKinney and the ABA in 2017 to co-launch the effort. The project’s goal is to create a pipeline for underrepresented students into legal education and ultimately the profession.
