IU McKinney's IP Center to Co-Organize Conference on New Paradigms of Law in Taiwan
08/25/2017
The Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law is a co-organizer of the upcoming Conference on New Paradigms of Law. The event, which is also being organized by Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law’s Tsai Center for Law, Science and Innovation; and the National Cheng Chi University School of Law in Taiwan, is scheduled for December 4 and 5.
Bitcoins, Uber, Airbnb, drones, fantasy sports, and many other developments are causing disruptions in areas of technology, economics, and culture. These disruptions prompt questions about emerging norms that regulate transactions, conduct, and activities outside of existing laws, and whether these new norms are consistent with existing laws. The conference will explore the potential consequences of these new norms and other new paradigms of law.
The event will take place at National Cheng Chi University School of Law in Taipei, Taiwan. Tentative panel discussion topics include “Patents, Innovation and New Paradigms of Law,” “Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things,” “Competition, Regulation, and New Norms,” “Technology, Social Media, and New Social and Legal Norms,” “Race Representations, Human Rights, and Social Hierarchy Paradigms,” and “Failures, Justice, and Rethinking Solutions.” Speakers from IU McKinney will include Professor Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Director of the IP Center; Professor Hamid Piroozi; Professor Max Huffman; Professor Karen Bravo, Professor Carlton Waterhouse, and Professor Frank Emmert. In addition, Professor Apinya Bunditwuthisagul, S.J.D. ’15, of the Thai Chamber of Commerce University School of Law, will take part in the event.
More information on the conference will be posted on the IU McKinney website as details become available.
