IU McKinney Service Day on August 17 brought approximately 100 students, faculty and staff together for an afternoon of volunteering at Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.
The Student Bar Association, in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Admissions, hosted the second annual service day prior to new student orientation at IU McKinney. Volunteers gathered in the atrium at Inlow Hall for lunch before traveling as a group to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.
Gleaners' mission is to lead the fight against hunger in central and southeast Indiana by collecting, storing, and distributing food to those in need. Gleaners distributes food to hungry Hoosiers through a network of over 250 partner agencies including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.
Volunteer numbers doubled compared to the first year of the event in 2016, according to Johnny Pryor, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
“Service Day provides an opportunity for new students to connect with their new classmates, professors, and advisors,” Pryor said. “It also helps build community within our school.”
