Professor Hagan, IU McKinney Alumni and Students Craft Guide to Help Military Personnel
10/28/2016
Professor Carrie Hagan, Sarah Thurman, ’16, and 3L Nasha Baughman have completed a project with Army OneSource and the Servicemember Civil Relief Act Foundation to create the Indiana Judge's Guide to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). McKinney 3L Robyn Pauker edited the guide, and Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David, ’82, wrote the foreward. Justice David served in the Unites States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp on active duty until 1986, and on reserve duty until 2010.
The guide provides an overview of the SCRA, and will help the judiciary and other members of Indiana’s legal community to understand the Act and its protections for military personnel and their families.
“As a current service member,” Baughman said, “I wanted to contribute to the Judge’s Guide because the SCRA is not familiar to many service members, let alone the legal community. This project combines both of my passions, protection of our military and the law.” Baughman is an Intelligence Officer in the Navy Reserve.
The goal of the SCRA is to enable those actively serving in the military to devote their energy to the defense of our nation by relieving them from the distraction of certain civil matters. The SCRA extends relief to all Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy service members on active duty, including reservists, members of the National Guard, and Air National Guard who have been activated for duty.
