02/19/2018
IU McKinney's Cane Awards for outstanding professors and administration members were announced at the school's annual Barrister's Ball, which took place this year on February 17 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis. All of the awards are selected by McKinney law students.
The Black Cane for most outstanding professor went to Professor Frank Sullivan, Jr., Professor of Practice at IU McKinney. This marks the second time he has won the Black Cane award. Professor Sullivan joined the faculty after 19 years of service as a Justice on the Indiana Supreme Court, where he authored approximately 500 majority opinions addressing a wide range of criminal, civil, and tax law issues. He teaches Closely Held Business Organizations, Securities Regulation, and Advanced Sales.
The Red Cane for most outstanding professor who has been with the law school for less than three years was presented to Visiting Professor Aila Hoss. Prior to coming to IU McKinney, Professor Hoss served as a staff attorney at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Law Program. Her research explores topics in public health law, health policy development, and the impact of federal Indian law and Tribal law on health outcomes.
The White Cane for most outstanding administrative staff member was awarded to Director of Academic and Bar Success Michele Cooley. She joined the staff at IU McKinney in 2016 as the Associate Director for Student Affairs, and was appointed to her current position in 2017. She teaches Bar Exam Strategies and Tactics, and Advanced Legal Skills and Analysis as an adjunct professor at the law school.
