MACON, Ga. -- Cathy Cox is in her first week as the new Mercer Law School Dean, but she isn't new to the Mercer Community.

Cox graduated from Mercer Law and said some faculty that taught her are still teaching at the school.

She said law schools across the country are still in re-building mode after the recession, trying to boost enrollment.

Cox wants Mercer Law to expose students to emerging legal fields as the economy continues to evolve.

"I am going to make sure that we are going to train our lawyers for the cutting edge jobs that are out there with the research going on across Georgia, so that we can provide the best jobs for our students and jobs that match up with their interests," Cox said.

Before taking her position as dean, Cox was President of Young Harris College. Cox also served in the Georgia House of Representatives and as Georgia Secretary of State in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Cox said Middle Georgia benefits from students who graduate from Mercer Law because they are more likely to stay in town to begin their careers.
