AUWCL Students Visit Amman, Jordan During “Alternative Winter Break”

In January 2018, American University Washington College of Law students interested in refugees, human rights, and immigration law took advantage of the opportunity, made available through the law school's International Refugee Assistance Project, to visit Amman, Jordan, as part of an alternative winter break. AUWCL students had the chance to interview torture survivors, Iraqi and Syrian refugees, and at-risk populations, as well as visit NGOs that provide services to those in need.
Allen Liu, AUWCL’s Student Bar Association President, described his experience:
“Speaking with these Iraqis was incredibly uplifting yet deeply frustrating. On the one hand, Iraqis, like you and me, just want to live a healthy, stable, fulfilling life(…) On the other(…) they’ve had to live unstable, insecure, and tenuous lives in a foreign country by no fault of their own except for belonging to a particular social group or living in the wrong neighborhood.”
