American University Washington College of Law Appoints Fernando Laguarda Professorial Lecturer and Director of the Program on Law and Government

WASHINGTON, June 28, 2017– American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) today announced that Fernando Laguarda has been appointed Professorial Lecturer and the new Director of the Program on Law and Government. Laguarda will oversee all operations of and strategic planning for the Program on Law and Government, and teach Antitrust, Communications Law, and Legal Ethics, among other courses, as a law school faculty member.

Co-founded by Professor (now Congressman) Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the Program on Law and Government is a renowned academic center offering compelling events, cutting edge degrees, and a range of academic and research initiatives all within a community of scholars, practitioners, fellow, and alumni exploring and promoting the interplay of law and domestic public policy. The Program distinguishes AUWCL as a vibrant center of critical thinking and discourse at the intersection of law and government. AUWCL and Program alumni serve in prominent positions in private practice, business, civil society, teaching, and public service.

"Fernando is an accomplished attorney who brings a compelling mix of experiences and fresh perspective to the Program on Law and Government,” said Vice Dean Tony Varona. “He is uniquely positioned to lead the Program to greater heights and benefit our students, alumni, and the broader legal community.”

Laguarda was most recently vice president, external affairs and policy counselor at Time Warner Cable, and previously a partner at Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis LLP and before that at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo, PC. His practice focused on antitrust, telecommunications, and digital media. He received his A.B. from Harvard College and his JD from Georgetown University. He has served on the board of directors of TPRC (The Telecommunications and Technology Research Conference), the Harvard Alumni Association, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, and the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino.

A Native of Uruguay and fluent Spanish speaker, Laguarda has contributed to a number of scholarly and practical publications, such as the Federal Communications Law Journal, the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology, and the Creighton Law Review, as well as ABA-published practice manuals and books.
