Two Twin Cities law schools are starting pro-bono, student-led legal chapters to advance the civil and human rights of Jewish people.

The William Mitchell and St. Thomas law schools are the first Midwest colleges to have a Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law. There soon will be eight such centers nationwide.

The Washington, D.C.-based Brandeis Center, which opened its first chapter in 2011, says it’s seen a spike in incidents of anti-Semitism and discrimination against Jewish people on U.S. college campuses.

The centers host speakers and events and provide free legal research and advocacy to victims of discrimination. Information on the program can be found online at brandeiscenter.com.
