New Law Faculty: Thirteen Year Comparison

Table 4A shows the gender composition of the cohort of new law faculty in each of the past thirteen years. Overall, the percentage of women has been fairly stable, averaging 49.8 percent over the thirteen years (see Appendix B) and ranging between a low of 43.6 percent (1996-97) and a high of 55.0 percent (1993-94). In 2002-03, the percentage of women new faculty was 48.8 percent, down from the percentages in the previous two years (53.2% in 2001-02 and 53.6% in 2000-01). In all thirteen years, the percentage of new lecturers and instructors who were women was significantly higher than for the other title groups.

Table 4B shows the percentage of new faculty members that belong to minority ethnic/racial groups. That percentage dropped in 1997-98 to 17.2 percent after ranging between 20.6 percent and 25.8 percent in the previous seven years and then rose to 22.9 percent in both 1998-99 and 1999-2000, dropped to 19.4 percent in 2000-01, rose to 22.9 percent in 2001-02, and dropped to 20.8 percent in 2002-03. Again, note that these data have been revised and differ from those reported in earlier AALS statistical reports, and that the 2002-03 percentage is based on data with a high percentage of missing ethnic information. The minority percentage for 2002-03 may change significantly when the data are revised in next year’s report.
