  Consumer Counseling and Bankruptcy Clinic Course Summary

1. Open to students who have completed or are enrolled in Debtor Creditor Law.

2. A one semester clinic with a 2 credit seminar and 3 credit fieldwork component.

3. Primary emphasis on the following skills:

client interviewing;
counseling;
analysis and problem solving;
fact investigation;
legal research; and
case management.
4. Students work in teams with primary case management responsibility, including,
conducting the initial client interview;
conducting any necessary follow-up meetings;
investigating the client's financial status;
preparing a counseling plan;
counseling the client;
preparing any necessary documents; and
appearing in court and other proceedings.
5. Time commitment is about 12 hours per week for the fieldwork component, plus the work and attendance at the weekly seminar.

6. Weekly team meetings with supervisor (clinic director); new client interviews during first half of the semester (approximately 10 cases per team).
