Jason Belk to join NYU Law as new dean of students

NYU School of Law announced Jason Belk as the new dean of students, to begin on September 8. He comes to the Law School from Duke University School of Law, where he has served as the assistant dean for student affairs since December 2008.

Belk is a dedicated student mentor, counselor, and advocate, and a talented administrator. At Duke, he was the leader of the school’s student affairs team. In that role, he was responsible for advising all of the chartered student groups; overseeing the coordination of the year’s most high-profile events, including orientation and graduation; and counseling students on a range of issues including professional development, academic concerns, incidents of bias and harassment, family crises, and mental health issues. He was also the architect of the Duke Law Wellness Program, an events series aimed at promoting overall health for law students, and served as the harassment prevention coordinator and disability liaison for the law school.

Prior to joining Duke, Belk was a practicing attorney, most recently at Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice in Raleigh, North Carolina, and before that at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky, and Walker in Washington, DC, and Farella Braun + Martel in San Francisco. A North Carolina native, Belk received his JD in 2004 from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he was a member of the African-American Law & Policy Report and was active in Law Students of African Descent and the UC Berkeley Men’s Octet.  He also holds a Master in Public Policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and a BA from Duke.
