Why Attend?
The twenty-second annual Workshop for New Law Teachers is designed to offer new law teachers ideas about teaching techniques and scholarly development and to enable them to share excitement, experiences and concerns about entering the academic world. The workshop provides an opportunity to discuss the expectations that students and colleagues may have about new teachers, and the most effective means for achieving professional success in the first few years of teaching. It will focus on issues of teaching and scholarship, as well as institutional and individual concerns of new law teachers.

The Workshop for New Clinical Teachers is designed to offer new law faculty an introduction to the teaching of clinical courses. The workshop will address the basic tasks of the clinical teacher: setting goals for clinical courses, teaching in seminars, supervising students, conducting rounds, and evaluating students. The workshop will also address the special challenges facing new clinical faculty in such areas as scholarship and status.

Who Should Attend?
The Workshop for New Law Teachers should be of interest to newly appointed faculty members, including teachers with up to two years of teaching experience.

The Workshop for New Clinical Teachers should be of interest to new teachers of in-house and externship clinical courses and to all new teachers interested in clinical teaching methodology.

When are these Workshops?
The Workshop for New Law Teachers will begin on Thursday, June 24, with registration at 4:00 p.m., followed by a reception and dinner and two days of plenary sessions and small group discussions. The workshop will conclude at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 26. The dinner speaker is Judith C. Areen, Dean, Georgetown University Law Center. Friday’s luncheon speaker is W.H. Knight, Jr., Dean, University of Washington School of Law. AALS Sections on Minority Groups and Women in Legal Education will host continental breakfasts, and AALS Sections on Legal Writing and Research and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues will host informal evening gatherings.
The Workshop for New Clinical Teachers will begin on Saturday, June 26, with registration at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception, plenary sessions, and small group discussions. The workshop will conclude at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 27.

Where are these Workshops?
The workshops and sleeping accommodations will be at The Westin Grand Hotel, 2350 M Street, NW, Washington, DC. The room rate is $175.00 for single or double occupancy. This rate is subject to a 14.5% sales tax. To make a reservation: complete the Hotel Reservation Request included in this brochure and mail it to The Westin Grand Hotel; or, if paying by credit card, either call (202) 429-0100 (do not use the toll free reservation number) or fax the form to (202) 429-9759. The cut-off date for making a room reservation is June 4, 2004. Specify the AALS Workshop on New Law Teachers when making a reservation in order to receive the special rate. Availability is not guaranteed to the cut-off date. Please make your hotel reservation early since the block of rooms may sell out before the cut-off date.

Local Transportation
Union Station is three miles from the Hotel; taxi fare is approximately $10.00; add $1.00 during rush hour (7:00-9:30 a.m. and 4:00-6:30 p.m.). Union Station services both Amtrak and Metro (Washington, DC’s subway system). On Metro, take the Red Line from Union Station three stops to Metro Center, switching to either Orange or Blue Lines to Foggy Bottom Metro Station.
Reagan National Airport is located six miles from the Hotel; taxi fare is approximately $20.00 one way; add $1.00 during rush hour (use a non-metered D.C. cab). To ride the Metro (Washington, DC’s subway system) to the Hotel, take the Blue Line to Foggy Bottom Metro Station.

Dulles International Airport is 27 miles from the Hotel; taxi fare is approximately $65.00 each way (use metered cab). Super Shuttle provides door-to-door service (with other stops) to the Hotel for $22.00 each way. Go to the Ground Transportation desk in the baggage claim area to purchase a ticket. You can then proceed to the Super Shuttle boarding area located on the lower level, outside at curb 1D or 1F. Twenty-four hour advance reservation is required for the return to the airport. Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is approximately 50 minutes in non-rush hour from the Hotel. Taxi fare from BWI is approximately $75.00. Super Shuttle provides door-to-door service (with other stops) to the hotel for a fare of $30.00 each way. Go to lower level and follow signs to the Ground Transportation desk located between carousels six and seven. Twenty-four hour advance reservation is required for the return to the airport. The MARC Train runs round trips from BWI to Union Station in Washington, DC on Monday through Friday. Depending on the train schedule, this may be the quickest way into Washington, DC. Go to the Amtrak MARC shuttle stop on the lower level ground transportation area outside of baggage claim. Shuttles to the train stop depart every 15 minutes. You may purchase your ticket at the station. One-way fare is $5.00, round-trip $8.75; Visa and MasterCard accepted. The trip to Union Station will take approximately 38 minutes. Airline Discounts
AALS is pleased to announce that it has been able to secure special discount agreements with both United Airlines and Delta Airlines. Reservations can be made by you or your professional travel consultant.

United Airlines offers a 5% discount off the lowest applicable fare, including First Class, and 10% off the unrestricted mid-week coach fares when purchased seven days in advance.
