Which schools have access to the FAR?
All AALS Member and some other law schools have access to the online Faculty Appointments Register searchable database. These include all member schools and other law schools that have adopted the non discrimination policy consistent with AALS. In addition, there are sometimes other law schools (non-members) that subscribe to this service and can receive the FAR on paper. Finally, we occasionally receive requests from other departments in the university, which are interested in receiving the FAR.
May I submit a form on paper?
Yes and no. We can provide a questionnaire version of the FAR Online to those who do not have internet access, but everyone's FAR information has to be entered into the online system. If a candidate cannot or does not want to enter the information, the AALS can do it; we charge $50 for that service and require earlier deadlines.
How do I pay the fee?
There are three options for paying the FAR fee. You may pay online, by fax or mail. Go to the Main Menu and select option 3) - “Submit my FAR to AALS.”
Select “Submit and Pay Now.” From here you will be able to enter your credit card information and pay online. You may also print out a payment form, fax it along with credit card information or mail it along with check or credit card information.
Remember that we need a completed FAR form and a payment by the deadline date for your form to be included in a distribution.
Do I need a specific browser to access the FAR Online?
Yes, you need a relatively current browser, Internet Explorer 3.0 and higher should work. Also, you should have Java enabled for the FAR Online to work properly.
When do schools contact candidates?
The FAR is made available to law schools approximately one week after the deadline dates. Law school recruiters search and review the FAR database and then contact candidates directly; the AALS is not involved in the scheduling of interviews. Some schools review the forms quickly and begin scheduling interviews for the Faculty Recruitment Conference. Other schools take longer to review and contact candidates.
Do you have any advice about the AALS Faculty Recruitment process?
Yes, we have an article that appeared in the Journal of Legal Education in 1988. Much of the advice is still pertinent. We recommend all candidates read it before taking part in the AALS Faculty Recruitment Services.
I participated in a prior FAR year. I am trying to update the FAR pages and the system will only allow me to update the “personal tab”. Can I access my old form and update it?
Log into your FAR profile. Click “Create Another FAR”. You will receive a new username. Your FAR form information will copy in the current FAR year. Log in with the new username and you will be able to update the FAR form for the current FAR year.
There are several sets of fees and deadlines. Do I have to pay the FAR fee more than once?
To become part of the FAR, you need only to submit the FAR form and fee once. Because no information on submitted FAR forms can be revised (except contact information), a few candidates submit new forms for redistribution if important background information changes. These candidates must pay the FAR fee again.
When does the recruiting cycle begin?
The recruiting cycle begins anew each summer, with the release of the first distribution.
What if I want to change my FAR after the deadline?
Once a deadline has passed you will be able to change contact information and the supplemental resume only. If you choose to submit another FAR, please note that you must pay another fee and your new information will not replace the original. You will have two forms in the database.
When are the Placement Bulletins available to Candidates that participate in the Faculty Appointments Register?
The Placement Bulletin is only available online to Faculty Appointment Register Candidates. Please click here to see available publication dates.
Which Distribution is better for Faculty Appointment Registrants the 1st, 2nd or 3rd?
Recruiters have suggested that registrants should ideally participate in the 1st or the 2nd distribution. Registrants however can submit a FAR form in any of the distributions for the academic year.
What is the purpose and benefit of the 4th distribution?
The Fourth Distribution allows recruiters to search additional Candidate forms after the Faculty Recruitment Conference. This distribution allows candidates to participate in one of the fall distributions in the next academic year at no additional charge. A memorandum is emailed to candidates in the summer explaining the procedures for this option.
I submitted my FAR information and made a payment. Will the changes I make after submission be reflected on the form?
Yes, you may make changes the FAR form after it has been submitted if the deadline has not passed. Click “update” on the individual tabs of the online form.
Is there a one page limit for the resume?
There is a one page limit for the FAR form, but not the supplemental resume. There is no page limit for the supplemental resume which can be uploaded to your FAR profile. You are encouraged to submit a supplemental resume.
