MEMORANDUM 99-55

December 15, 1999

To: Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Law Schools
From: Carl C. Monk
Subject: Report of the AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities

Enclosed are copies of Learning to Serve: The Findings and Proposals of the AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities. You may have seen an early draft of this report. The final version includes some changes and the addition of an appendix providing a sampling of the range of pro bono projects found at American law schools. We are sending you several copies for you to share with your faculty.

As noted in the report, Cynthia F. Adcock has begun her work with AALS providing support and advice to individual law schools interested in examining how they can teach best the professional ethic of pro bono service. This project is funded by the Open Society Institute through July 2000. Although funding may be extended for one additional year, you should contact Cindy soon if you would like more information on the project and/or if you would like her to consult with your school on this important initiative.
