MEMORANDUM 99-33

To:              Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools

From:          Harry G. Prince

Subject:       First Distribution of 1999-2000 Faculty Appointments Register

Enclosed is the paper copy version of the first distribution of the fall 1999 Faculty Appointments Register (FAR), containing 496 faculty appointment registrants.  New this year, the FAR is also available as an online database.  Candidates have input their qualifications and experiences directly into a database via the web.  Beginning August 27, 1999, recruiters can access this database by visiting www.aals.org/recruit/ and clicking on the “candidate search” link.  Recruiters can then use search criteria to find candidates to invite to interview.  Please note that this database will be accessible to recruiters only if the IP address information form included in Deans Memorandum 99-25, dated July 30, 1999, has been completed and returned to AALS.  If that form has not yet been submitted to AALS, please do so as soon as possible.

Please urge those who handle the FAR to treat the candidate information with confidentiality.  Schools may not share FAR candidate information outside the law school appointments process.  It is also important that schools not contact references until authorized by the candidate when the candidate has checked off on the form "Do Not Contact Unless Authorized."  Candidates have a legitimate interest in not risking unauthorized contact with their employer.

The next distribution of the candidate forms received in our office by August 27 will be mailed to you on or before September 10.  Forms received between August 28 and September 10 will be mailed on or before September 24.  There will be a fourth distribution on or before October 8 for forms received between September 11 and September 24, 1999.

Unless a registrant requests otherwise, all candidate forms received after September 24 will be made available to recruiting teams, together with all other forms previously received, at the Faculty Recruitment Conference.  This year’s Conference will be held at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C., November 4-6, 1999.
