MEMORANDUM 99-25

To:                   Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools

FROM:            Jane M. La Barbera

SUBJECT:       Faculty Appointments Register On-Line

The Association of American Law Schools is pleased to announce that its Faculty Appointments Register (FAR) will be available this year as an online database.  This system allows candidates interested in law teaching to input their qualifications and experiences directly into a database via the web.  Recruiters will be able to access that database over the web and use search criteria to find candidates to invite to interview.  We hope that this new way of administering the FAR will prove to be easier for candidates and more useful to recruiters.

The AALS would like to thank its Special Committee on Faculty Recruitment Services for the time and effort they devoted to ensuring the success of the FAR Online.

Allen K. Easley, Washburn University, Chair

Mark A. Folmsbee, Washburn University, Technical Advise

Steven Paul Goldberg, Georgetown University, Technical Advise

James L. Hoover, Columbia University

Mary Kay Kane, University of California, Hastings

We want to particularly recognize the leadership role and the significant number of hours that Associate Dean Easley devoted to this ambitious project.

Candidates have already begun entering data for the 1999-2000 Faculty Appointments Register and on August 27, 1999, the first distribution of the FAR will be ready for recruiters to begin searching.  Starting August 27th, you may access the online FAR database by visiting www.aals.org/recruit/ and clicking on the “candidate search” link.

AALS is providing law schools with the hard copy distributions of the FAR.  We provide them for two reasons:  (1) to provide what we have in the past and (2) as a backup should there be technical difficulties with the FAR On-Line.

We consider the FAR to be confidential information to protect the privacy of candidates, the recruiters’ search module uses IP filtering and username and password security.  The IP address identifies the particular computer that will be used to search the FAR database.  If you have not provided AALS with your IP address prior to attempting to access the database, you will receive an error message and will not be able to access the database.  Each recruitment team member will create their own username and password upon gaining access to the system.  Enclosed is a form on which you should include the names of your recruitment team members as well as their IP addresses.  If IP addresses are dynamically assigned, you may also provide a range of IP addresses that include all of the recruiters from your school.  The Information Technology person at your school will be able to assist you in completing this form .  We urge you to identify your recruitment team members in advance of the first distribution so that on August 27 you can begin searching the database to assist you in identifying candidates to interview.
