MEMORANDUM 99-10

February 22, 1999

To: Deans of Member Schools and Members of the AALS House of Representatives
From: Carl C. Monk
Subject: Revision of Executive Committee Regulation 1.3, Admissions Requirements -- Recruitment

At its January meeting, the Executive Committee discussed Executive Committee Regulation 1.3's requirement that member schools provide substantial "consumer" information to applicants for admission. The Regulation currently requires that anyone requesting an application be provided with "recent historical data regarding the academic qualifications of its student body, attrition rate, student activities and groups, and employment patterns of its graduates; and information concerning the school's grading system, retention rules and procedures, and financial aid programs and policies." The Executive Committee noted that anyone requesting an application should also have notice of a school's nondiscrimination policies and thus added this to the regulation. The change is bolded in the following paragraph:

CHAPTER 1. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1.3 Recruitment. A member school shall provide to anyone requesting an application the following information: recent historical data regarding the academic qualifications of its student body, attrition rate, student activities and groups, and employment patterns of its graduates; and information concerning the school's grading system, retention rules and procedures, non-discrimination policies, and financial aid programs and policies. A member school shall provide this information either in the law school catalog or in some other manner sufficient to enable a prospective applicant to make informed choices.

In accordance with Bylaw 5-4, unless objection is received from at least ten member schools within 60 days of mailing this memorandum, Executive Committee Regulation 1.3 as amended will continue in effect. If your school objects to the new regulation, the objection should state the reasons for your objection.
