MEMORANDUM 98-51

October 27, 1998

To: Deans and Associate Deans of Member Schools and Members of the AALS House of Representatives
From: Carl C. Monk
Subject: U.S. News and World Report Survey

As you know, U.S. News and World Report has recently mailed its "Annual Reputation Survey of Law Schools" to selected academics, judges, and practitioners. This year's survey also asks respondents to give their opinion about what weight should be given to various "quality indicators".

The AALS position is that no reputational survey can be valid because no one knows a sufficient amount about the nation's law schools to rank even a very small number of them, much less all law schools. We also believe that any attempt to assign weights to various "quality indicators" is inherently flawed. We therefore suggest that all recipients of the survey seriously consider whether it is appropriate for them to respond to it.

If you have any questions about the AALS position, please feel free to contact me.
