MEMORANDUM 98-17
March 6, 1998
| To: | Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools |
| From: | Carl C. Monk |
| Subject: | Presidents Initiative on Race Campus Week of Dialogue: Who Will Build One America? |
The Presidents Commission on Race has called for a Campus Week of Dialogue from April 6-9, 1998. U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Chair of the Advisory Board to the Presidents Initiative on Race, Dr. John Hope Franklin, have written letters to college and university presidents asking them to commit to this effort by organizing events on their campuses. The purpose of this memorandum is to urge you, as deans of the nations law schools, to participate, either as part of your universitys programs, or through an event arranged at the initiative of the law school.
Whatever ones views about how to solve racial problems or the best means for becoming a more inclusive society, we must all recognize the existence of issues of race and the need to address those issues. As legal educators we have a responsibility to encourage and help facilitate an open dialogue in our own communities. I therefore urge you to review the attached description of events that could be part of the Campus Week of Dialogue and to participate actively within your community.
The AALS has agreed to serve as a clearinghouse of information on law school activities for the Presidents Initiative on Race; I therefore request that you send us information about any events you organize or in which you otherwise participate. If we can provide any assistance with whatever project you may want to plan, please contact me or the Associations Deputy Director, Bari Burke.
