MEMORANDUM 06-01
| TO: | Deans of Member Law Schools and Members of the House of Representatives |
| FROM: | Carl C. Monk |
| SUBJECT: | Amendments to Executive Committee Regulations Regarding Procedures for Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure |
As you may know, the AALS Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure has jurisdiction over complaints from faculty members regarding violations of academic freedom, or discrimination on a ground prohibited by AALS bylaws.
The procedures for CAFT review and decision of complaints have not been reviewed for some years, but last year, under the leadership of CAFT chair Tom Galligan, Tennessee, the committee recommended changes that were approved by the AALS Executive Committee and those changes are now being promulgated as amendments to existing Executive Committee regulations.
The primary purposes of the changes are to increase the emphasis on facilitation of mediation at earlier stages of any dispute, and to improve communication between the Committee and complainants and member schools.
A “strikethrough” version of the changes is attached. Although a quick glance at those may make them appear to be extensive, that is simply because some language is being moved to different sections.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
In accordance with Bylaw 5-4, unless objection is received from at least ten member schools within 60 days of mailing a copy of these regulations, Executive Committee Regulations 3.1 and 7.1(c), as amended, will continue in effect.
