REVISED
MEMORANDUM 03-42
November 19, 2003
| To: | Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools | |
| From: | Carl C. Monk | |
| Subject: | Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) |
We are resending this memorandum because the earlier mailing inadvertently omitted a copy of the survey. Please note that the LSSSE 2004 Priority Registration Deadline referenced in the brochure has been extended to January 14, 2004.
Last winter I wrote to call your attention to a new project, the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE). In that note I invited you to participate in a field test for this survey, which is hosted at the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research and sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The response to my invitation was overwhelming, with over 50 law schools expressing an interest in participating. Eleven schools were selected for participation and have now received a detailed analysis of their results.
LSSSE (pronounced "lessie") is viewed by many as a particularly helpful method for determining students' views and attitudes about the nature of their activities and learning during law school. The results promise to better inform us about students' experiences and their views about the quality of a school's academic programs. Moreover, the data are "actionable," in that the findings point to aspects of law school that can be improved. Aggregate results should also be helpful to AALS in planning its professional development programs.
For these reasons, AALS is pleased to be a cosponsor of the Law School Survey of Student Engagement with The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Enclosed is additional information about the spring 2004 survey including participation costs. You can view a demonstration version of the LSSSE online survey and additional project details at http://www.iub.edu/~nsse/lssse. If you have questions regarding the LSSSE and the benefits of participating, contact Patrick O'Day, LSSSE Project Manager, at 617-548-1247 or paoday@indiana.edu.
I look forward to having you join us in this national effort to improve the quality of legal education.
