MEMORANDUM 03-08
February 14, 2003
| To: | Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools |
| From: | Carl C. Monk |
| Subject: | Sponsorship of Attendees at the 2004 Conference "Educating Lawyers for Transnational Challenges" |
In a separate memorandum I have forwarded to you a draft of the program for this conference and a "Request for Expressions of Interest in Participating".
This conference will be the first global program at which invited legal educators will discuss the challenges facing transnational lawyers, how those challenges should be addressed in the academic programs of law schools, and the methods and tools for meeting those challenges. It is an outgrowth of the very successful international conference held at Villa La Pietra in May 2000 which focused on structural issues in legal education that affect global cooperation. This will also be the first global conference at which the formation of an international organization of law schools and legal educators will be considered.
To assure that participants reflect the variety of cultures and legal systems throughout the world, the AALS plans to provide a limited amount of financial assistance for some participants from outside the United States who would not otherwise be able to attend the conference. Although some of this funding will be directly from AALS, we do not anticipate that we will be able to meet the needs of applicants because AALS funds are limited; thus, the purpose of this memorandum is to ask if your school would be interested in sponsoring the participation of a legal educator who would not otherwise be able to attend. The cost of sponsorship is $3,000; your school would of course be identified in the program materials as the sponsor of a foreign legal educator.
All participants must complete the Request for Expressions of Interest and then be invited to participate in the conference. If you know a legal educator at a sister school program or elsewhere who you believe could make a significant contribution to the success of the program, please forward the Request for Expressions of Interest to that person so that he or she may complete it and return it to our office no later than April 15. We anticipate selecting participants by May 15.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or e-mail at cmonk@aals.org.
