MEMORANDUM 02-59

December 24, 2002

To: Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools
From: Carl C. Monk
Subject: National Survey of Law Student Engagement

The AALS is a member of the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, which is a group of about 45 higher education associations. The chief executive officers of the associations meet for two hours once a month to discuss matters of general importance to the higher education community. About a year ago our meeting was devoted to a presentation about the "National Survey of Student Engagement", a project of the University of Indiana that is funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

This survey appears to be one vehicle through which a school could learn about the views and attitudes of its students. The AALS Executive Committee thus concluded that the AALS might want to participate in adapting such a survey for use in law schools. Last month I received an email from a law-Ph.D. student who is working with the National Survey of Student Engagement who has already adapted the survey for use in law schools. The survey and solicitation for your participation from NSSE is attached. You may want to consider participating in the survey as part of your planning efforts. Please note that you are asked to contact the Project Associate no later than January 24, 2003.
