MEMORANDUM 02-51

October 30, 2002

To: Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools
From: Carl C. Monk, AALS Executive Director
Elliott S. Milstein, Past President of the AALS
Dean Hill Rivkin, Director of the AALS Equal Justice Project
Subject: AALS Equal Justice Project Report

During AY 2000-2001 the AALS Equal Justice Project hosted 19 colloquia at law schools across the country. In addition, the Plenary Session at the AALS Annual Meeting in 2001 was built around the work and the findings of the Project. Approximately 2000 people attended one of those events. Throughout the Project, we intended to learn about the work already underway by law schools and law professors and to encourage new pedagogy, scholarship and service designed to increase the fairness of our justice system. We are proud to present to you the Final Report of the Project, PURSUING EQUAL JUSTICE: LAW SCHOOLS AND THE PROVISION OF LEGAL SERVICES, which summarizes the significant findings and provides links that will enable those interested to learn more about what was discovered.

Enclosed are copies of the Report. We ask you to distribute them to those in your institution who are interested in working on improving the availability of competent lawyers for the underrepresented or in helping those lawyers achieve their goals. It is our expectation that the Equal Justice Project will continue and that the network of individuals brought together by its work will be maintained and strengthened through its efforts. And, of course, we hope that this Report will be helpful in inspiring new work consistent with the Project’s mission.

We would be pleased to receive your comments on this report and on the Project. We also want to acknowledge and thank the many people who contributed to the success of this phase of The Equal Justice Project.
