October 24, 2001

To: Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Law Schools
From: Veryl V. Miles, Deputy Director
Subject: Report of the Committee on Bar Admissions and Lawyer Performance

Attached for your information is the final report on the “AALS Survey of Law Schools On Programs and Courses Designed to Enhance Bar Examination Performance” prepared by the Committee on Bar Admissions and Lawyer Performance and Mr. Rick White, AALS Research Associate. The survey was sent to law schools in the fall of 1999 and again in the spring of 2000 requesting that law schools report on programs designed to supplement bar preparation and general programs that might improve bar passage rates.

The report includes descriptions of various programs that law schools have indicated were effective in improving student preparation for the bar examination. The results of this survey are being provided to serve as a source of information for schools that are considering adopting or modifying existing supplemental bar passage programs. The report does not provide an assessment of the effectiveness of any of the programs described.
