MEMORANDUM 01-38
October 2001
| To: | Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Law Schools
AALS Section on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities |
| From: | Carl C. Monk |
| Subject: | Enclosed “Handbook on Law School Pro Bono Programs” |
In 1997 then AALS President-elect Deborah Rhode appointed a Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities in Law Schools, chaired by David Chambers, University of Michigan. The Commission published a report in October 1999, entitled “Learning to Serve: The Findings and Proposals of the AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities”. The Commission also assisted in the creation of the AALS Section on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities. The Commission recommended that the Association establish a project to help develop materials on successful pro bono projects and on approaches to funding. The enclosed Handbook is the result of that project.
The Open Society Institute provided funding for compiling and publishing this Handbook. The AALS appreciates the commitment and cooperation of the many law schools that participated in the Pro Bono Project and worked with the Project Director, Cynthia Adcock. I am sure you will continue to cooperate with the new joint AALS-ABA Pro Bono Project in this important endeavor for all in legal education.
