February 9, 2001
| To: | Deans of Member and Fee-Paid Schools Associate Deans for Academic Affairs |
| From: | Carl C. Monk |
| Subject: | AALS Workshop on "Managing Conflict and Building Consensus" for Deans |
|
This memorandum is sent to suggest that you hold the dates of October 4-6, 2001 for a workshop that will be devoted exclusively to training deans in conflict management and consensus building within the law school. The working title of the workshop is "Managing Conflict and Building Consensus in Law Schools: Strategies, Procedures and Skills for Effective Deans". The workshop will be held in the Boulder/Denver, Colorado area at the Westin Westminster. Unlike most AALS programs, this one will be presented entirely by CDR Associates, the group that trained the AALS Resource Corps this past summer. The two lead partners of CDR Associates, Chris Moore and Susan Wildau, have substantial national and international experience both in mediating directly and training others in conflict management and consensus building. You will be able to see a brief preview of the type of program they will present at the ABA Deans Workshop in San Diego Friday, February 16 from 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm. Sometime in early March there will be a planning session for this workshop. We are anxious to have your thoughts about the particular types of conflict and problems that should be addressed in this workshop. The members of the planning group are Judith C. Areen, Georgetown University; Dennis O. Lynch, University of Miami; Leo P. Martinez, University of California, Hastings; Nancy B. Rapoport, University of Houston; and David E. Shipley, University of Georgia. We look forward to hearing your ideas and developing an informative program.
