| Subject: | Request for Proposals for Teaching Presentations/Demonstrations for the AALS Conference on New Ideas at The Westin Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 9-13, 2001 |
|
The Planning Committee for the AALS Conference entitled New Ideas for Experienced Teachers: We Teach, But Do They Learn?, is soliciting proposals for presentations of new teaching ideas. The Planning Committee has scheduled one plenary session at the conference for presentations by three faculty members selected from the proposals submitted. That particular session is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, June 12th. We are aware that many law faculty members spend a great deal of time thinking about and working on their teaching, and yet most of their colleagues are unaware of their work. In order to open the conference to a wide array of ideas about teaching, we are encouraging those faculty who would like to share their work and ideas with a larger audience to submit a proposal for a brief (15-20 minute) presentation at the Calgary Conference. The presentation can consist of a talk about the faculty member's teaching ideas or pedagogical innovations, a teaching demonstration, or some combination of the two. Since the conference will focus on the relationship of learning theory to law school teaching, proposals for presentations which have some connection with that theme will be favored in the selection process. Interested faculty should submit a brief (no more than one single-spaced page) written description of the proposed presentation. In addition, each one page proposal should be accompanied by a copy, description or outline (no more than one page) of some handout material which will be made available to the conference audience. This handout material may be a summary or outline of the talk, material related to a teaching demonstration, or bibliographic or background material. The proposed handout should itself be fairly brief--no more than five pages. The one page proposal and one page handout summary is due by December 15, 2000. Please send it by e-mail to Gehan Girguis, AALS Executive Assistant, at ggirguis@aals.org. Any questions you have about your proposal or the solicitation process should be directed to Professor Margaret Woo of the Planning Committee at m.woo@nunet.neu.edu. Because one purpose of this process is to publicize the pedagogical work of law faculty, we will make available all proposals, not just the three selected for presentation, through the AALS conference web site. All proposals should therefore be sent to the AALS as e-mails or attachments to e-mail at the same time they are submitted by mail. Any attachments should be in Word or Word Perfect format and should be emailed to Paul Flood, AALS Publication Manager, at pflood@aals.org. The Planning Committee will select the three presenters by the end of January 2001. The three faculty members chosen to make presentations must register for the conference and will be responsible for their own expenses, but their conference fee will be waived in recognition of their contributions to the conference.
