MEMORANDUM 00-20

June 29, 2000

To: Deans of Member and Fee Paid Schools
From: Carl C. Monk
Subject: AALS Conference of International Legal Educators

As you may recall, the Association sponsored its first Conference of International Legal Educators May 24 - 28, 2000 at the New York University facility of Villa La Pietra in Florence, Italy. The Conference was particularly successful, with representatives from approximately 30 different countries who are the leading legal educators in their region of the world. All participants submitted advanced written materials regarding the legal education and legal systems in their countries. (The U.S. participants provided a memorandum regarding particular aspects of legal education in the United States.) These papers were assembled in booklet form and provided to all participants. The Conference booklet should be available for purchase within the next month. Many of the articles will also be published, in revised form, in the Journal of Legal Education sometime within the next year. A Spanish version will be published in the University of Puerto Rico Law Review.

The AALS was asked to follow up on this conference by appointing a working group from among the conference participants to consider next steps to help achieve our goal of greater international cooperation among law schools and law faculty, and increase mutual understanding of different legal systems and different cultures. I have attached a list of program participants and the outline of the agenda for the Conference.

LEGAL EDUCATORS FROM ALL CONTINENTS CALL FOR NEW INITIATIVES TO ENHANCE GLOBAL COOPERATION

June 7, 2000, Washington, D.C. - Fifty legal educators from thirty different countries, meeting in Florence, Italy, have asked the Association of American Law Schools to appoint a working group to consider new forms of international cooperation, including the possible creation of a new international organization. The call for appointment of the working group came at the conclusion of the "La Pietra" Conference, a conference of international legal educators sponsored by the Association of American Law Schools and held at New York University's Villa La Pietra in Florence, Italy.

The La Pietra Conference, concluded last week, was part of the Association of American Law Schools' Centennial Celebration. It represents a significant new international presence for the Association, and resulted from the Association's member schools and their faculty asking that the Association do more to facilitate cooperation among law schools and law faculty in the United States and other countries.

Dean John Sexton, a past President of the Association, and dean of New York University School of Law, chaired the Conference Planning Committee. The Committee consisted of faculty representing different countries and legal systems from around the world. Sexton said, "This Conference and the call for appointment of the working group demonstrates that law can no longer be studied in a vacuum and that legal educators from throughout the world seek a greater understanding of other cultures and legal systems. New York University School of Law has a long-standing commitment to global legal education and was pleased to host this Conference."

The Association's Executive Director, Carl Monk, said, "I am very pleased at the confidence that has been placed by these distinguished legal educators in the Association to follow up on this groundbreaking Conference. America's law schools recognize that their students can receive a quality legal education and be effective members of the legal profession only if they understand the legal systems of other countries throughout the world."

Conference participants all prepared advanced papers about their own legal systems. The papers covered topics such as financing of legal education; who students and law faculty are and how they are selected; the curriculum structure of different countries; and how cooperation can occur in the context of the different systems. Monk said, "These papers represent a rich resource for those who seek to learn more about the legal education system of other countries. The papers will be published in the Association's Journal of Legal Education."

The working group will be appointed after consultation with all conference participants and will be announced later this summer.
